The Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool is a safe space for youth to spend time with their friends in the summer. We often see children come to the pool from open to close almost everyday! Some of them do not know how to swim, and others come without lunches or snacks. Many utilized the food programs available at their school during the academic year, but these programs often stop once school is out.
In our community, we saw a need for two important things:
Swimming lessons that could be accessible and affordable to all
A continued food program during the summer months
In response to these needs, we developed the Calgary Learns to Swim program. In partnership with Calgary Meals on Wheels, the Calgary Learns to Swim program will offer free swimming lessons, followed by a free meal. The program will run at the Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool every Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 11am-12:30pm, from July 9th to August 29th. While aimed at low-income households, the program will be open to all youth aged 6-16. This will be a registered program, and participant numbers will be restricted based on the number of volunteer instructors recruited.
We are seeking to recruit volunteers, 14 years and older, who have good swimming skills, and enjoy working with kids. We are also seeking to recruit qualified swim instructors, 16 years and older, looking for volunteer teaching experience, to help with the lesson portion of the program. All volunteers and volunteer swim instructors would assist with both the lesson and meal portions of the program. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to give back to their city, and make a positive impact in our community, while gaining experience in teaching swimming lessons!
